With news that Hollywood action flick Fast & Furious 7 might make its way to Dubai to film, we take a look back at the hit franchise and see how it’s been revving it up at the box office since it debuted in 2001: 

2001: The Fast and the Furious

Cast: Starred Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster

Director: Directed by Rob Cohen

Plot: A Los Angeles police officer Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) becomes enamoured with the underground world of street racing — the very thing he has been sent undercover to destroy.

2003: 2 Fast 2 Furious

Cast: Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Eva Mendes

Director: John Singleton

Plot: O’Conner and childhood friend Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) join forces to bring down a Miami drug baron in exchange for clear records.

Worldwide box office revenue: $236 million 

2006: The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift

Cast: Starred Vin Diesel, Sung Kang, Bow Wow

Director: Justin Lin

Plot: Sean Boswell (Lucas Black), an Alabama teenager who moves in with his father in Tokyo to avoid a jail sentence, becomes a major contender in the world of drift racing.

Worldwide box office revenue: $158 million 

2009: Fast & Furious

Cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Sung Keng

Director: Justin Lin

Plot: Brian O’Conner teams up with Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) for the Los Angeles FBI to destroy the operation of a heroin importer.

Worldwide box office revenue: $363 million 

2011: Fast Five

Cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Ludacris, Eva Mendes, Dwayne Johnson

Director: Justin Lin

Plot: Dominic Toretto and his crew of street racers organise a large-scale heist to buy their freedom, under the watch of a powerful Brazilian drug lord and a dangerous federal agent.

Worldwide box office revenue: $626 million 

2013: Fast & Furious 6

Cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham

Director: Justin Lin

Plot: Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) has Dominic and Brian reconvene their crew in order to bring down a criminal mastermind who leads an organisation of mercenary drivers across 12 countries, with the reward of full pardons for them all if they succeed.

Worldwide box office revenue: $695 million 

2014: Fast & Furious 7

Cast: Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Jason Statham

Director: James Wan

Plot: While plot details are still sketchy, we know that this seventh film will chronologically take place after Tokyo Drift. Diesel has said that the film will be the beginning of a new trilogy. And of course, the car-loving city of Dubai is all set to be featured in the story. Are you reading this Tom Cruise?
