While dreams seem random, they follow common patterns
You’re falling. You are running away from fire. You’re running away from floods. You’re having dinner with celebrities and musicians. Or maybe, you’re just going about an ordinary day. These are just some of the most common dream patterns people experience—often appearing in unexpected and unusual ways. For instance, Deeksha Basu, a Dubai-based physician laughs as she tries to understand her seemingly ‘mundane’ dreams. “I don’t have such exciting dreams. They just mirror my regular life, and in most of my dreams, I’m just cleaning the house, sweeping the floor, and dusting furniture.”
She’s always perplexed to hear other’s dreams that range from melancholy whimsy to rather terrifying dreams that involve snakes and rats. Yet, as Dubai-based Robert Howard, a psychologist explains: There is much to uncover even in the simplicity of everyday dreams. “In dream interpretation, a house typically represents the self or the mind, and cleaning it suggests a desire for clarity, renewal, or control over one's life. Such dreams may reflect an effort to process emotions, resolve lingering thoughts, or declutter mental stress,” he explains. If the cleaning feels satisfying, it could indicate personal growth, a fresh start, or a sense of accomplishment. However, if it feels overwhelming or never-ending, it may suggest unresolved issues, stress, or a need to regain balance in waking life.
As Howard notes there are several possible interpretations, connected to a person’s psychological makeup and experiences. "The world of dreams remains largely unexplored, despite over a century of research," However, he also points out that, while each person’s dreams are unique, there are several common threads that appear in most of them.
Psychologists explain that while dreams may seem random, many follow common patterns. Here’s what some of the most frequent dream themes might mean and how they can provide insight into your own emotions.
You’re back in school, writing a math test
Dubai-based Mihee Kang, a freelancer and Shaila Nair, an entrepreneur reveal that they often find themselves in school. Kang says, “In my dream, I’m always stuck on one math problem. Time is running out. And then, the teacher takes away my exam sheet. This is the pattern, even though there might be ten different things happening in the background.
On the other hand, Nair finds herself trying to pay attention in class. “Somehow, I can see my old classroom and my peers, so vividly. I can see the blackboard, and I feel the same sense of confusion that I did back then, because I understand nothing. The teacher asks me to stand up and answer a question, and I have nothing to say,” she says.
As Howard explains, dreaming about returning to school is incredibly common. It was the first place we faced tests, experienced competition, and navigated formative experiences that helped shape our core personality traits. This dream often resurfaces during moments of self-evaluation or pressure. As Howard explains, the key to interpreting it lies in your emotional response—did you feel prepared, or did it leave you anxious? That is your takeaway."
Meeting a celebrity
‘I was having tea with BTS in the forest with the animals from the Disney film Cinderella’
A person who prefers to be kept anonymous, had that particular dream and doesn’t particularly understand that. Does that mean he wants to be friends with BTS surrounded by enchanted animals? “Or, it could just mean that I want to live in a world of fantasy?”
Well, while entire books could be dedicated to researching that dream, Howard tries to provide possible explanations: Dreaming of meeting a celebrity often symbolises aspirations, self-worth, or a desire for recognition. Celebrities represent success, influence, and talent, so such dreams may reflect your ambitions or admiration for certain qualities they possess. However, sometimes, they simply reflect escapism, especially if you've recently consumed media featuring that celebrity.
If the interaction is positive, it may signal growing confidence or inspiration, while an unpleasant encounter could indicate self-doubt or fear of judgment. In some cases, celebrities in dreams act as guides or mentors, offering advice that represents your inner wisdom. Ultimately, the meaning depends on your emotions and personal associations with the celebrity, making the dream a reflection of your own desires, goals, and self-perception.
To interpret a celebrity dream, consider your personal connection to them," says Howard. "What qualities make them relatable to you?”
The fear of being late
Quite often, people dream of being late. There’s a sense of tardiness that persists in their dreams, eliciting fear and worry. As Dubai-based Ramya Krishna, a psychologist explains, “It could signify a deep sense of overwhelm, especially if the person isn’t tardy in real life. They fear ‘messing something up’, that could just snowball into worse incidents.”
Speaking from her experience, “This is something I’ve observed with people, who possibly fear losing an opportunity and are just stressed generally with time limits,” she says.
Dreams of your teeth falling
This is a particularly common dream and could signify several interpretations. One, it could be connected to a person’s fear of their public image. This dream often reflects concerns about one's potency, competence, and ability to make an impact. It is also commonly linked to periods of change and transition.
You’re being chased
Look back at your dreams and try to understand your emotions here: Who is chasing you? Is it a monster? Or it could be a mob of people? These could be manifestations of indiscretion catching up with you. "The significance of who is chasing you lies more in your personal associations with them than in their actual identity. In dreams, people often symbolise others in our lives or even different aspects of ourselves,” explains Krishna.
A loved one who passed away visiting your dream
It’s a small hope that we keep, where we hope to find those we loved and lost in our dreams, if to never meet again. As both Krishna and Howard advise, rather than focusing on what the message they could be sending in your dream, just take the chance to recreate a happier memory with them. “Remember, dreams are also a product of our emotions and memories. They show what we are strongly connected to. So if troubles you, trying working through these feelings with close friends,” adds Krishna.
Dreams, whether ordinary or bizarre, reflect our inner emotions, fears, and desires. By paying attention to the patterns and feelings within them, we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our subconscious mind.
