Some shows really make you feel like just relaxing in the sun for a long, nap. It’s comfy, no pressure, no expectations and you just feel like a cat in front of a roaring fireplace. That’s the charm of shows like When I Fly Towards You, a 2023 gem.

While K-Dramas have established a thriving fandom of their own, the C-Drama rage isn’t far behind. As First Frost, Hidden Love, have dominated popular discourse, a warm and charming drama When I Fly Towards You, which released in 2023 also added to the fun flavour of romcoms, with its easy-going and languid pace.

So, should you watch it? Well, are you up for 24 episodes? Then go for it. When I Fly Towards You is the kind of C-drama that is all fluffy and cute, but lands with surprising depth, and just so much charm. Set in 2012, it follows the sunny and slightly chaotic Su Zaizai as she barrels into high school and almost immediately sets her sights on Zhang Lurang, the school's quiet, brooding heartthrob with a 100 per cent resting mystery face. Naturally, he has his emotional walls reinforced with steel beams, while she's basically a confetti cannon of joy. That’s the sort of trope we live for.

Yet, beneath Zhang Lurang’s  exterior is a teen shouldering the weight of high expectations, comparison trauma (hello, golden sibling trope), and a person buried in broken self0confidence. Moreover, Zaizai sees him for who he is. What starts as a lighthearted crush evolves into a slow, sincere unraveling of emotional armor, with plenty of sweet moments, awkward giggles, and that nostalgic early-2010s classroom innocence.

With smart dialogue, character development, and chemistry that slowly grows on you, this drama is a slow-burn romance, and is a peaceful, calming journey. It’s not just a high school romance—it’s about finding someone who believes in you when you’re still learning to believe in yourself. So yes, it’s cute—but it also lands a few punches to the heart, in the best way.
