Dubai: It’s almost time for one of the biggest shows in the past few years to come to an end.

Squid Game, which first aired in 2021 on Netflix had all of us holding our breath as we crossed our fingers, prayed and hoped for our favourite characters to survive.

Yes, I’m talking about Ali. That’s one death no one has gotten over and probably never will.

But season 1 of the show took the entire world by surprise with how gruesome and shocking the twists and turns were. The popularity of season 1 even led the writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk to come up with season 2. He also revealed he lost eight to nine teeth while working on the show.

While the show does have its stressful and nerve-wracking moments, we decided to list out the top 5 moments from the series so far that broke our hearts, shocked and surprised us.

Heart-breaking deaths

You know when we are going with this. We are here to talk about all the shocking deaths of some brilliant characters on the show and the first person that comes to mind is Ali.

The character played by Anupam Tripathi made place in everyone’s hearts as he was one of the very few characters who was genuinely good. We would say too good for the show. He believed that no matter what, people would choose to do the right thing, especially his friends and “brother”, Cho Sang-woo (played by Park Hae-soo).

But alas, he was left as heartbroken and shocked as the audience when he was betrayed, leading to his demise.

Other upsetting deaths included Ji-yeong played by Lee Yoo-mi. While Yoo-mi’s character was in one episode alone, she made a lasting impression. With her sad backstory, her conversation with Hoyeon’s Kang Sae-byeok and her sacrifice in the end, connected with the audience – making her death upsetting.

The frontman and cop are brothers?

One of the most shocking reveals on the show – our favourite police officer, Hwang Jun-ho played by Wi Ha-joon, finding out his brother, who he had been searching for in the first season was the frontman – the man behind all the games.

The shocked expression on Jun-ho’s face when In-ho, played by Lee Byung-hyun, revealed his face was the same one we had. While we did have tiny hints throughout the show, leading up to this moment, it still left us shocked and sad for Jun-ho’s character.

Gong Yoo: The mysterious handsome, tall recruiter

The mysterious, nameless character played by Gong Yoo, was one of the most memorable characters on the show, despite having the smallest role in the first season.

While we thought that was the last we saw of Gong Yoo in the show, the actor surprised and scared us with his acting in the second season. The handsome, mysterious man who was always calm and collected – even while slapping someone senseless at a subway station – turned the tables in season 2 as we got to see the maniacal side of him.

Gong Yoo, once again with a small role, stole the show in the first couple of episodes with his acting.

The likeable Thanos

We cannot talk about top moments from the series without mentioning T.O.P himself.

T.O.P or Choi Seung-hyun, who played an antagonist named Thanos in the second season, was one of the most memorable characters on the show. While all his actions were problematic, T.O.P stole the show with his humour. He was a character who you would get annoyed at but also find funny.

Making a comeback after almost a decade, T.O.P became a fan favourite globally.

Nerve-wracking marathon

The marathon in the second season, which required each group to complete five games within a time limit, was one of the most nerve-wracking moments of the show. Especially when our favourite two groups were on the verge of losing the marathon on several occasions.

It was pretty obvious the main characters would not die in that game, but it was nevertheless, stressful.

While the first two seasons had its top moments, we can’t wait to see what the third and final season has in store for the fans. While there are several theories doing the rounds on the internet, there are a couple of theories we partially agree with. For example, Kang Ha-neul’s character Kang Dae-ho being a little suspicious – especially after he left the others to die when he chickened out at the most important part of the show.

Another theory doing the rounds is Lee Jin-wook’s character actually being alive. The actor who plays the dad of the young girl suffering with cancer gets shot in the last episode of season 2, but some theories suggest he wasn’t killed. Theories suggest Jo Yu-ri’s character Kim Jun-hee was the one who shot him, but kept him alive, as the series showed her connection with the young girl.

While these are just theories, we can’t wait to see what season 3 has in store for us.
