Short + Sweet festival will return to The Junction, Alserkal Avenue for its 2018 edition from January 26 to March 3.

The community theatre event showcases a series of 10-minute plays over six weekends, all of which are competing for top prizes. The 80 plays will feature more than 200 actors, writers, directors, and independent theatre companies. Short + Sweet began in Australia before becoming a global event.

“The Dubai edition is also the second largest festival in the world behind only Sydney, the oldest and flagship festival of Short+Sweet,” said festival director Alex Broun.

Genres include comedy, drama, romance and thrillers. This year has introduced a separate weekend for non-English plays as an ode to the diversity of Dubai.

Two categories, Wildcards and Top 40, signify newer talents and more seasoned entertainers respectively. Plays in both categories are assessed by a panel of judges, though audiences will also be able to vote. Winners will avail cash prizes for Best Play, Best Director, Best Playwright (local), Best Actor/Actress, Best Newcomer Male/Female, Best Poster and Best Independent Theatre Company.

Tickets are Dh80 early bird and Dh100 standard.
