Is Pakistani television ready to embrace subjects that were once considered taboo?

It seems so, if you take into account Hum TV’s Kitni Girhain Baaqi Hain, which referenced a same-sex relationship, and also got the channel into trouble with the Pakistan Electronic Media Authority (PEMRA), or Udaari, which dealt with the issue of paedophilia.

Hum TV’s latest show, Pagli, seeks to shed light on the issues that are faced by a young woman when it becomes evident that she is suffering from a mental disorder.

A Momina Duraid production, the show is scripted by Khurram Abbas. The lead cast includes Hira Salman in the lead role, Noor Ul Hassan, and pop singer turned actor Asim Azhar. They are supported by Saba Faisal, Mahmood Aslam and Rashid Farooqui. The show debuted on Hum TV on Monday.
