Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat, who famously branded India as being regressive for women at the recent Cannes International Film Festival, has been invited to participate in a debate at Oxford University to express her views on gender inequality. She will be a part of the debate entitled This House Believes Gender Exists to Oppress on February 27.
Organised by the prestigious debating society Oxford Union, Sherawat now joins the ranks of world leaders who were guest speakers on the same platform in the past.
“Getting ready for a debate at The historic Oxford Union where presidents like Carter, Nixon nd Reagan hv debated!”, tweeted Sherawat.
In a statement, she said: “Yes, I have accepted the invitation. A lot of preparation is required as it’s a great honour. I come from a small town, so it means a lot to be invited to speak at such a historic venue. I can use this platform to highlight issues like the drop in the conviction rate in rape cases across the country.”
In her interview at Cannes that went viral, Sherawat termed India as “depressing” and “hypocritical” when it came to women’s issues. Her statements created an uproar and she was criticised for belittling her native country on a global platform. Sherawat’s response to a journalist who questioned her about her stance in India recently went viral on the internet. Following that, the outspoken actress, appeared on CNN’s Piers Morgan show to defend her choice of words.
She’s best known for her racy 27-kisses riddled debut Khwahish (2003) and thriller Murder (2004).
