STRAIGHT INTA CALABASAS

Dr. Dre has gone shopping in Calabasas, buying a custom home in a gated community for $4.9 million (Dh17.99 million).

The 1997 Mediterranean-style mansion has in its nearly 9,400 square feet of living space a game room, a snazzy home theatre and a potential workspace for the hip-hop mogul: an acoustically engineered studio/office. A total of six bedrooms and 5.75 bathrooms includes a large master suite with a fireplace.

The three-quarter-acre lot contains grassy areas, a free-form swimming pool and spa, a fire pit and a barbecue centre. Elsewhere on the grounds is a lighted and fenced tennis/sports court.

Unobstructed views from the property take in the surrounding mountains.

The property had been listed since January for $5.25 million, records show. It previously sold seven years ago for $3.925 million.

The purchase was made through a trust.

Dr. Dre, 53, is also the founder and chief executive of Aftermath Entertainment and Beats Electronics. The Grammy winner and record producer has worked with Snoop Dogg, Eminem and 50 Cent, among others.

He owns a number of properties in Los Angeles County, including a massive Brentwood compound that he purchased four years ago from New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, for $40 million.

A TRADITIONAL INVESTMENT PAYS OFF

Moby, electronic-music pioneer, deejay and restaurateur, may have to add successful real estate investor to his many titles. He’s sold a Los Feliz home that he renovated for $4.91 million, or $405,000 more than the asking price.

Purchased by the musician two years ago for $3.4 million, the English Traditional home has been refreshed while retaining many original details.

Of note are the groin vault ceilings, delicate wainscoting and elaborate fireplace mantels. The eat-in kitchen, which has booth seating, has been updated.

The 4,644-square-foot living space also includes a formal living room, a family room with built-ins, five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. On the lower level, a hidden passage links an office and guest suite with a bathroom and steam room.

Outside, the walled and gated property has a new covered patio and various sitting areas; the big evergreens give the grounds a forest vibe. Flagstone surrounds the swimming pool, which has a spa.

Moby, whose legal name is Richard Melville Hall, in March released his 15th studio album, Everything Was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt. The musician rose to fame in the 1990s for his electronic dance music, including the 1999 electronica album “Play.”

Three years ago, he ventured into restaurant ownership, opening the vegan bistro Little Pine in Silver Lake.

A COUPLE OF STARS IN ITS PAST

A Bel-Air estate that was once the home of actors Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe is on the market for $13.95 million.

The handsome brick and half-timbered Tudor was designed by architect Gerard R. Colcord for a prominent insurance executive. Completed in 1969, the home was so beloved by the businessman and his wife that they had it replicated in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, after relocating to the area, according to Colcord Home author Bret Parsons.

Set amid mature oaks and sycamores, the two-story house takes its cues from the medieval halls and churches of England. Pitched and beamed cathedral ceilings, oak plank floors and detailed woodwork are among details of note. Picture windows with square and diamond bevels take in leafy views.

Within nearly 8,650 square feet of interior space is a living room with an oversized fireplace, a formal dining room, a modernised kitchen and a media room with a wet bar. The master suite has an updated bathroom and a sitting room for a total of five bedrooms and 5.75 bathrooms.

The roughly 1 acre of grounds also includes a guesthouse and a structure that holds a wine cellar. Elsewhere is a swimming pool.

Witherspoon and Phillippe bought the house in 2001 for $3.3 million and owned it for about three years, records show.

HIS NEW SCENE IS A TRADITIONAL ONE

Duncan Jones, director of the video game crossover film Warcraft and the new Netflix movie Mute, has found a quiet spot to kick back in Sherman Oaks, buying a traditional-style home in the neighbourhood for $3.55 million.

The gated estate, set on three-fourths of an acre, is approached by a wide motor court. The 5,800-square-foot house features an eat-in kitchen, five bedrooms and a billiards room with a wet bar.

Floors lined in dark hardwood and terra-cotta tile, as well as a dose of red-brick accents, draw the eye throughout.

Outside, the idyllic grounds hold a brick-lined pool and spa, detached office, putting green and a teahouse with a fireplace. A guesthouse adds another bedroom.

Jones, 46, is the son of late singer-songwriter David Bowie and model-actress Angela Bowie.

He won the Bafta award for outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer for his 2009 film Moon, which remains his most celebrated work. In 2011, he also directed the science-fiction film Source Code, starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
