The real challenge is to maintain country's accomplishments, UAE leader says

Abu Dhabi: "The festive atmosphere in the country reflects the spirit of the union instilled in our souls by Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the UAE, and the other Rulers of Emirates," said President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The President said this during the celebrations held at Yas Island on Friday which were attended by more than 70,000 Emiratis and expatriates.

UAE rejoices in spirit of union
The UAE National Day was celebrated with gaiety and fervour by all residents. Celebratory events were in full swing in the capital.
Some 15 fighter planes put on an aerobatic show in the skies over Abu Dhabi as a mark of respect to the founder of the country Shaikh Zayed. Three helicopters flew the UAE flag over Shaikh Zayed Stadium while the armed forces band played the National anthem.
Shaikh Khalifa said the country is on the threshold of a new phase of work to achieve further development in all fields which will place the UAE among the top countries across the globe.

Also present at the celebrations were His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Their Highnesses the Supreme Council Members and Rulers, General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Crown Princes, Deputy Rulers, Shaikhs, ministers and senior officials.
The President said, "The first 40 years of our country were a start and what is to come will be more important for the UAE's march. It will be a real challenge to maintain the accomplishments achieved thus far, and enhance them all."

The National Folk Dance Group entertained the crowds with a series of folk dances. Groups of schoolgirls danced to the lilting tunes of UAE singers who extolled the achievements of the UAE leaders.
More than 350 motorcyclists with their machines decorated with flags and the national colours paraded. A group of riders conducted a skill show.
A documentary film of the country's history tracing its development from the early stages of nomadic society to the modern nation was projected on a wide screen. Another documentary portrayed the history of the oil wealth and the first oil well drilled in Abu Dhabi. A recording of one of Shaikh Zayed's speeches was played to overwhelming emotions of national pride and admiration for the founder of the nation. The programme ended with spectacular fireworks and a laser show.
