COVID-19 has made many us realise that life is far from certain. If you have a family that are dependant on you to provide, the pandemic may have made you consider that it’s impossible to predict what’s around the corner. The coronavirus has affected even healthy people, so what if you were suddenly not around to provide for your loved ones?

This pandemic has had a deep impact on our everyday lives. Since it started, I have had to make sure that my family is provided for and that their future is well taken care of.

- Annabec Andal, Duty Manager, Nursing Services at Medcare Hospital Al Safa, Dubai

Annabec Andal, a Filipino Duty Manager, Nursing Services at Medcare Hospital Al Safa, Dubai, says that COVID-19 has made her far more conscientious about her family’s future welfare.

“The outbreak of COVID-19 has enhanced my sense of awareness about protection and ensuring the safety of my family,” she says.

“This pandemic has had a deep impact on our everyday lives. Since it started, I have had to make sure that my family is provided for and that their future is well taken care of. Effective communication and preparedness are ways to ensure that my family is protected against unexpected events."

Andal also says that her own health has become increasingly significant to her following the outbreak of the coronavirus, especially as she works on the frontline of the fight against pandemic. “As a healthcare worker who is at risk to being exposed to the virus, my top priority is making sure my health is okay. What changed is that I am now more aware of safety precautions, which includes monitoring and assessing my own health. This changed perspective requires a lot of self-discipline. Social distancing and handwashing go a long way. I also believe we should focus on what is best for everyone as well as taking care of ourselves both physically, mentally and ensuring our families’ future financial wellbeing.

I’m thinking about my family and their future financial security more and I’m more careful. I ask them to stop going out without a mask and I ask them to check their temperature when they are at home.

- Rakesh Prasad, Demi Chef de Partie at the Paramount Hotel Dubai

Rakesh Prasad, an Indian Demi Chef de Partie at the Paramount Hotel Dubai, says that he has also been taking precautions following COVID-19 and that the virus has changed his perspective on his family’s safety.

“I’m thinking about my family and their future financial security more and I’m more careful. I ask them to stop going out without a mask and I ask them to check their temperature when they are at home,” he says.

Taking control with life insurance

Saji Abraham, an Indian based in Dubai, says that ensuring he has a life insurance policy has given him reassurance in these uncertain times. “These unpredictable last months have made a lot of my friends and family members back home and here think about how to best get past this time, and what can we do now to protect against financial hurdles.

“A number of my friends are the main breadwinners of their families. While we're grateful to be financially secure in these times, we also discuss how key it is to be more financially stable in the future,” he says.

“The [Zurich] YourLife policy offered me the ability to get substantial additional coverage without having to take another medical and pay a very reasonable amount, much less than I thought. The best part was that the process was purely online and contactless.

Abraham is confident that the policy will give his family financial security, regardless of the future. “I want my children to confidently pursue their goals, be it professional or personal. They shouldn’t think or feel that the future is grim or worry about achieving what they want for themselves. This is a mind-set that my wife and I try to encourage in them every day by assuring them that they will be protected by us no matter what, so they can chase their dreams.”

A professional perspective

Walter Jopp, CEO, Zurich Middle East, says that he has seen an evolution in people’s sense of certainty following the pandemic. “The unprecedented nature of COVID-19 with the rising rate of infections and the increasing death toll across the globe has altered the mind set of individuals, and we see this in our customers as well, who have become more cautious. The previous misconception of “it won’t happen to me” has been set straight and people are now coming to terms with the fact that the unexpected does happen and it can happen to anyone and everyone.”

Jopp says that his organisations’ YourLife life insurance policy is a cost-effective and reliable way of re-taking control of the future. “Life insurance helps you protect your family’s financial future, a need that has become stronger in the current COVID-19 environment, resulting in an increase in its importance,” he says.

“Yourlife empowers customers to take control of their future - on their own terms. We have been protecting our customers in the UAE for over 30 years and are proud to provide YourLife as part of our commitment to safeguard individuals and their families from the financial impact associated with passing away. Our strong claims commitment and track record means you can rest assured that we will deliver on our promise to you.”
