Dubai: Intersec 2013, a trade event for security, safety and fire protection industries, was opened today by Shaikh Mansoor Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum at the Dubai Convention and Exhibition Centre. Intersec is the second largest event of its kind in the world.

Regional and international exhibitors showcased a range of security and safety equipment that help to prevent safety threats. There was a big presence from manufacturers of video monitoring systems , CCTV cameras, and fire prevention devices.

“The region is growing fast so there is a need for efficient security. The event addresses the increasing security issues,” said Ahmad Pauwels, the organiser of the event, and Chief Executive Officer of messe frankfurt.

Demand for security equipment will increase to $100 billion annually by 2014.

Dubai Police showcased new software that helps eye-witnesses to recreate the image of a suspected criminal’s facial features. The software allows the user to choose from a range of facial features. It has been undergoing testing since December and is planned to be implemented this year, said an official from Dubai Police at the exhibition.

In the opposite hall, Sony, one of the leading electronics manufacturers, showcased CCTV cameras with face detection technology to clearly capture the face of a suspected criminal. The cameras, offered for indoor and outdoor use, can capture clear images of moving objects, at 60 frames per second (fps).

“The demand is quite high for these. We have distributors in Dubai but we have been receiving interest from distributors here,” said Billy Abrenica, Field Service Engineer. The cameras are used at homes, shopping malls, and government buildings, he said.
