One of the main objectives of the project Aveiro Digital Export (ADE) promoted by AIDA CCI (Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the District of Aveiro) is to showcase the competitive advantages of this privileged region of Portugal, besides strengthening the export and digital skills of companies in the district.

Here we highlight its competitive advantages, in the national context, regarding its geostrategic location.

The advantage is essentially due to the vast presence of transport infrastructures, which enable different modes of mobility (rail, sea, air, road, pedestrian and cycling) and allow rapid inter-regional and international connections.

This network of transport infrastructures has strongly contributed to the affirmation of the Aveiro Region as a critical territory for commercial flows at a national level and promoter of socio-economic dynamics with Europe and the rest of the world.

Existing infrastructures

Rail: Rail connections enable the transport of passengers and cargo throughout the country. Alfa Pendular, Intercity and Regional services, provided by CP - Comboios de Portugal are available.

Maritime: With an annual traffic of about 5.5 million tons, the Port of Aveiro is the largest conventional general cargo infrastructure, playing a key role in supporting the economic activity and the export capacity of many Portuguese industries.

Road: The road infrastructure serving Aveiro enables connections to the north, south and also with the rest of Iberia. The main distribution routes are: A1, A17, A25.

Air: The region has quick access (45 minutes) to Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport (OPO) and to São Jacinto Municipal Aerodrome.

Intermodal platform: The Port of Aveiro has an area of logistics and industrial activities. The ZALI is a unique port logistics platform in Portugal, offering competitive maritime and road-rail connections to international markets, including the possibility for economic operators to use a pier.

In addition to transport infrastructure, the Aveiro region has invested heavily in digital communications technology, with numerous organizations and research centers focusing on innovation and digital transition of local industry, along with the latest telecommunications technologies, including 5G:

Institute of Telecommunications (IT): The IT is involved in applied research both nationally and internationally, its main mission being to create and disseminate new knowledge and support advanced training in the broad field of Information, Communications and Electronic Technologies (ICT), with special emphasis on telecommunications.

Nokia Siemens Networks Technology Center: The technology center is considered one of the most relevant in the area of innovation, exporting solutions and knowledge worldwide.

Sapo.pt: Sapo was created at the University of Aveiro and revolutionized the digital media scene in Portugal. Today, it continues to be the reference center in Portugal for the broadcast of aggregated news, blogs or events.

Altice Labs: Altice Labs assumes a leadership position in the field of R&D and innovation in Portugal. The center is a reference in the global market and its products and solutions are used by more than 300 million people in over 60 countries around the world.

5G + IA Networks Reliability Center: With the main objective of empowering companies, the 5GAIner is a laboratory dedicated to experimentation with 5G Technology and Artificial Intelligence, helping the industry and facilitating the process of digital transition to fifth generation cellular networks.
