Airlines have cancelled, delayed, and divert services as Middle East airspaces close
Dubai: Once again, the skies over the Middle East are witnessing widespread disruption, with numerous airlines cancelling, delaying, or rerouting flights following Israel's recent attack on Iran.
The immediate closure of Iranian and Iraqi airspace and significant restrictions in Israeli and Jordanian airspace have triggered a cascade of global operational changes for carriers.
The large-scale attacks on Friday, June 13, follow the October 2024 attacks where Israel struck military sites in Iran.
While not as extensive as the current situation, there were temporary closures or advisories for specific airspaces, particularly over Iran and potentially surrounding areas, as a precautionary measure last year. This led to the rerouting of flights, especially those transiting between Europe and Asia that typically use Iranian airspace.
These attacks have come at the least opportune moment as Middle Eastern carriers and other global airlines were busy preparing for the upcoming summer rush.
Iranian authorities have confirmed the shutdown of the country's airspace until further notice. Similarly, Iraq closed its airspace and suspended all airport traffic early on Friday. This has particularly impacted one of the world's busiest air corridors, located in eastern Iraq near the Iranian border, which sees dozens of flights between Europe and the Gulf and Asia to Europe.
Here is a complete list of impacted airlines:
