Rare Porsche Gemballa Mirage GT destroyed in New York crash

Supercar cost $780,000 when new and was likely worth way more today, but not anymore...

According to several reports, Benjamin Chen, millionaire playboy, supercar aficionado, racer and co-founder of the Gold Rush Rally, crashed his rare Porsche Gemballa Mirage GT in Manhattan.

Videos of the incident, which occurred on Tuesday near the Hell's Kitchen neighbourhood of New York City, were captured and posted on social media. The supercar came speeding through an intersection and then crashed into a parked Toyota Sienna minivan.

It was then filmed speeding away from the incident with the car's bonnet flying off and other parts scattering all over the road while in yet another video, 33-year-old Chen was arrested by the NYPD and charged with reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs. Thankfully no one was injured.

When new, the supercar - powered by a 5.2-litre V10 making 650 horsepower (more than a brand-new Porsche 911 Turbo S) cost around $780,000 and they are likely worth even more today – but this one - believed to be number 23 of 25 ever built - isn’t anymore…

The Porsche has a known reputation for being difficult to drive at the limit, and is the car Fast and Furious actor Paul Walker and his friend Roger Rodas died in.

But, this isn’t the first time Chen has been involved in a crash with a highly desirable supercar; in 2013 he lost control of his McLaren MP4-12C and completely wrecked it after it came to rest in a storage unit near Mount Vernon, Texas. It looks like the poor Gemballa will also be sent to the scrap heap...
