The moment we heard Haiti's cries for help after the disastrous earthquake, we knew that something had to be done.

For an entire week, the pupils at Universal American School (UAS) worked hard and selflessly to collect funds for the crisis in Haiti.

Tim Manson, head of the Haiti Fund at UAS, said: "The students that were involved have shown commitment and passion in organising the fundraiser. Also, the school community has been generous and I would like to thank all the teachers and parents who helped out."

To end the fundraising week, an event was hosted on January 28 at the school's campus in Dubai Festival City.

The fundraiser consisted of various friendly sports matches between the pupils, teachers and parents. A musical show was also put on by the school's very own band, consisting entirely of students.

Dr Gunther Brandt, director of UAS, said: "I am proud of our whole community, with many of our students taking action in support of the people of Haiti. The ‘Haiti Day' at UAS is a fundraiser that may seem like a small endeavour in the impact it can have in helping, given the enormity of the tragedy.

"As in all fundraising, we must keep in mind what it means, far beyond what is raised. For all of us at UAS, it signifies our deeper purpose as a school — to always think of our task as shaping thoughtful and compassionate world citizens, young people who are equipped to act when it matters."

As humans, we are neither legally, nor morally obliged to help anyone in need. We can live our lives unaffected by the fact that there are people less fortunate than we are.

But, some of us just cannot live on the sidelines, watching as people suffer.
