DUBAI: Over 100,000 nursery kids have visited the Dubai Civil Defence centres since January to learn about ‘the life of a fireman’, as part of a community awareness programme.

“We are looking to spread awareness among children and educate them about the importance of a fireman’s job,” said Hooria Muhammad Tariq, awareness lecturer for Fire Safety and Rescue at Dubai Civil Defence.

Top tips

During the tour, children are given top tips on how to evacuate a place in case of a fire. “We encourage them to make note of their makani numbers (official geographic address) and the imporance of turning off the switches at plug points before leaving the house. We also explain why they should avoid using elevators in case of a fire,” added Hooria. The children also get an opportunity to interact with firemen. According to Hooria, in just two months close to 90 private schools in Dubai have participated in the awareness campaign.

“Eighty per cent of nursery schools in Dubai have been covered. Now we are shifting our focus to primary schools. Schools wanting to take part in the the programme may register at our website https://www.dcd.gov.ae/portal/ and register. There is no fee,” she added.
