Dubai: As Indian comedian Sunil Grover is set to visit Dubai for a show on April 20, his PR machinery predictably requests XPRESS to steer clear of any questions about his controversial exit from The Kapil Sharma Show (TKSS), a popular weekend comedy on the Indian TV channel Sony.

What’s unpredictable though is when Grover - who will be presenting his affable TKSS character of Dr Mashoor Gulati in his upcoming Comedy Clinic at the Shaikh Rashid Auditorium – describes Kapil as “a great comedian who makes the whole nation (India) laugh”.

Call it graciousness, humility or the plain truth, Grover’s unexpected comment in response to a query on his views about Kapil as a comedian comes amidst widespread reports of a bitter standoff between him and Kapil who is alleged to have abused him in an inebriated state on a recent flight to India from Australia.

Extension

Grover, who has preferred to remain silent on the mid-air rumpus, says he is someone who completely relates to his role as Dr Gulati. Having played other popular charatcters such as Rinku Bhabi in TKSS and Gutthi in the earlier Comedy Nights with Kapil, Grover feels the doctor is “an extension” of who he is.

“I like him because he makes people laugh. Just the thought that he is a doctor when he is not is funny. He comes across as an innocent and unapologetic character,” says Grover. As show after show has demonstrated, the doctor’s lack of medical knowledge, coupled with his brimming over-confidence and self-attested wisdom result in situations that are outrageous, yet funny, as he takes on complicated cases. Grover says his Comedy Clinic show in Dubai will be a jig on a live stage, quite distinct from his appearances on television. Asked to rate his comic quotient on a scale of one to 10, he says, “I would give myself 10. But I would not like to rate myself as I don’t know if I have mastered the skills required as a comedian. I am learning with time.”

Assisting the good doctor on the stage will be the feisty nurse Bumper (Kiku Sharda). The event is being organised by Maruti Entertainment and Milestone Entertainment.
