Dubai: You know you need to get off that chair, go for a walk, eat right and sleep tight. But if you still haven’t done anything about it, how about some music with your very own heartbeat in it that can serve as a reminder?

No kidding, but a new initiative by Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) Malls in collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Health and City Centre Clinic is offering a first-of-its kind opportunity for mall visitors to record their heartbeat into a personalised soundtrack, mixed by a professional DJ. All one has to do is go to a recording booth at the mall where a digital stethoscope, connected to a computer, creates a unique beat.

500 tunes

The month-long campaign called “Feel the Beat” was launched on August 30 to encourage women to become aware of the need to stay heart healthy and active.

The stethoscope listens, monitors and records the heartbeat, following which the DJ mixes the beat within a soundtrack using a customised app. The track is selected from a music library of 500 tunes in keeping with the visitor’s bpm. Each track is then personalised using special effects to create a unique heartbeat tune for that person.

“The idea is innovative and we hope people make use of it,” said Dr Arif Al Nooryani, executive director, Al Qassimi Hospital.

He said cardio vascular diseases were being increasingly reported among women, with the number of procedural cases going up from 10 per cent to 18 per cent in over the last decade in the UAE.

Fuad Mansoor Sharaf, senior director, property management (shopping malls), Majid Al Futtaim – Properties, said, “One of the most beautiful sounds in the world is the one of a healthy human heartbeat. It is a powerful, representation of vitality and life. With this in mind, the ‘Feel the Beat’ campaign combined technology and healthcare to empower visitors to make informed decisions about health.”

All participating malls have dedicated areas where you can get your blood pressure, blood sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI) checked by medical professionals who will refer you to a doctor if they find you are at risk for heart diseases.
