DUBAI: A laundry in Business Bay is offering free services for the unemployed this summer.

Filipino Rommel Carlos, 43, who owns Crystal Clean Laundry in Damac Business Tower on Abraj Street, said the initiative is aimed at helping jobseekers who can’t afford to get their clothes washed and ironed every time they go for that all important interview.

“Looking crisp and professional for a job interview during summer can be really tough as the oppressive desert heat and stifling humidity can render any outfit unwearable within hours.

"You can’t wear them a second time without taking them to a laundry. For the unemployed, especially those who have been job hunting for months, it can be an expensive proposition as they have to shell out around Dh5 for each wash. So I came up with the idea of easing their financial burden by offering them a free laundry service,” said Carlos.

Already, many jobseekers have benefited from the heart-warming gesture which started this month and runs until next month.

Among them is Gerogia Perez, 32, who worked in the hospitality sector before being made redundant a few months ago.

“I won’t have to worry about my laundry bills for at least two months,” he said. I hope I land a job soon and repay my dues.”

Carlos said he doesn’t seek any proof to ascertain if the person availing of the service is indeed looking for a job.

“We don’t ask for verification as it would be too embarassing. Ours is small gesture and I don’t think anyone would want to take advantage of it,” he said.
