UMM AL QUWAIN: Umm Al Quwain will soon have a new shelter for stray dogs.

Safe Haven, which has just got the approval of the Umm Al Quwain government, will be run by Stray Dogs Centre UAQ, a non-profit organisation.

Due to open early next year, the facility will be an extension of the Stray Dogs Centre UAQ. After medical treatment at the centre, the stay dogs will be released into Safe Haven which sprawls approx. two square kilometres.

“The place will be fully fenced and have several trees which will provide shade to the animals,” said Amirah William, owner of Stray Dogs Centre UAQ, which claims to have saved nearly 1,150 animals including dogs, cats, birds and a couple of donkeys and camels over the past five years.

According to Amirah, there are nearly 400 stray dogs in Umm Al Quwain that require immediate attention and out of those, at least 30 per cent are abandoned pets.
