DUBAI An impending bus fee hike at the Delhi Private School (DPS) Dubai has created a furore among parents, many of whom said they cannot afford the “more than doubled” increase.

A section of the parents told XPRESS they would be meeting with the school management on March 28 to appeal against the steep increase. Some said they would “boycott” the transport service provided by the school, located in the Gardens, as it is too expensive.

Smitha Rajeevan, who lives in Dubai Investment Park said she would have to cough up Dh4,100 a year, up from Dh1,500 for each of her two girls studying in Grade 8 and 6. “I was shocked when I was notified of the hike via SMS on March 12. I simply cannot afford the massive increase.”

Parents living in Bur Dubai and Karama, who have been paying Dh1,905 per annum, said they will now have to shell out Dh4,300.

For students living in Sharjah, the fees have shot up from Dh2,160 to Dh5,200. “The school should have discussed this with us,” said Biya Levy, mother of two boys in Grade 8 and 2.

XPRESS could not get an immediate comment from the school, but a copy of the circular sent to parents said: “In view of the growing challenges in the field of providing safe school transportation, Delhi Private School, Dubai has tied up with Al Saraya Buses Rental LLC (ASBT) to provide transportation for students with effect from 1 April 2015. ASBT uses a comprehensive system, wherein the latest technology is integrated with world-class best practices to develop a safe student transport system.”
