What is this campaign about?

Called ‘Stop!Stay Safe’, this anti-fireworks campaign seeks to educate the public about the dangers of the use of fireworks in Dubai. We want to convey this message to people of all nationalities who may feel inclined to use fireworks to mark festivities and celebrations. The aim is to ensure the safety of the people of Dubai.

Is there a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks?

No one can sell, buy or use any kind of fireworks just like that in Dubai. Only licensed companies can import fireworks (which are used in shows etc) and there is a due process for that which takes into consideration factors like storage, transportation etc.

What should one do if one is approached by an illegal peddler?

The incident should be duly reported to the police on our hotline. But the problem invariably is that no one complains because they are afraid.

What is the penalty if someone violates the ban and bursts crackers?

A fine of Dh3,000 and three months in jail.

Have there been any recent firework-related mishaps?

Thankfully no. But we all remember the accident in Al Quoz three years ago when four people died. More than 10 tons of fireworks had been brought in and was stored illegally.
