Abu Dhabi: The 27th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) which kicked off on Wednesday offers more than just a good read.

Organised by the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Cultural Authority (TCA), the fair features 1,320 exhibitors from 65 countries, displaying over 500,000 titles in 30 languages. The seven-day exhibition will also host more than 800 cultural activities, discussions, workshops and seminars.

“These seminars and activities reflect our commitment to establishing and developing the foundations for the publishing industry in the Middle East and North Africa region,” said Mohammad Al Shehhi, Director of Research and Publication at TCA.

“The main objective of this year’s programme is to establish Abu Dhabi as a cultural and publishing destination. It will undoubtedly provide visitors with exceptional educational opportunities and serve as a platform for making successful deals.”

Traversing the Silk Road

This year’s ADIBF is hosting China as the ‘Guest of Honour’ by celebrating the literary heritage of the land of Confucius. The China pavilion displays publications, literature, arts and cultural manifestations, highlighting the country’s success in fortifying its presence in the modern world.

The fair will also shed light on how China influenced the Old World through the Silk Road, a historically important trade route between China and the Mediterranean region. It has now been revived in a new cultural mold, in which Abu Dhabi is considered one of its most important hubs.

Among the intellectuals attending is Eugene Yun, one of China’s most important literary voices. Prominent seminars include ‘What do you know about life?’ - an attempt to discuss literature’s forms and relevance in life through the visions of a group of Chinese and Arab creative minds.
