DUBAI If you are one of those who gets pampered by your maids, here is a chance to return the favour.

On September 11, you can treat them and their friends to a free night out with a movie and a meal, thanks to an initiative by a group of young professionals who call themselves Shukhran Workers.

Group co-founder and realtor Mohit Bhojwani, 23, said the event, which is part of a series of such outings for workers, is exclusively open to female maids, nannies, cooks and other domestic help. “We plan to screen the Bollywood film Queen at a community hall in Bur Dubai. Those interested must register themselves before September 10.”

Snacks, goodies

Shukhran Workers, which has held several such movie nights since its inception last year, hosted over 70 blue collar workers at Holiday Inn, Bur Dubai on September 4.

Most movie nights have a similar attendance. With every movie that is screened, the group also provides sponsored snacks, popcorn and dinner, besides a goodie bag. Bhojwani said: “The workers get a brownie and a bottle of water as they come in. When the movie begins, they get popcorn. Packets of chips and a Red Bull drink are handed out during the interval. At the end of the evening, they get dinner boxes. We also hand out bags with goodies and souvenirs provided by our sponsors.”

Bhojwani said Shukran Workers comprises 14 volunteers, who are young professionals in their 20s keen on giving back to the community. So far from spending their weekends at a party or night club, they would rather be at such gatherings.

He said it all began last year when a group of friends would gather at a supermarket to shop for groceries. “We started buying and pooling some items for construction workers and send them out to different sites. We wanted to reach out to them in some way.”

Bhojwani said the group is constantly looking for avenues to reach out to people. When the Nepal earthquake struck, Shukhran Workers did their bit for Nepalese expats in the UAE. “We want to make a difference to as many people as possible. In October, we are targeting sections like garbage cleaners and delivery boys,” said Bhojwani.
