Abu Dhabi: A new service aimed at offering psychological support to cancer patients has been launched by the Cancer Patient Care Society in Abu Dhabi.

A free hotline for psychological support, an interactive website to share experiences with other patients and group therapy sessions are some of the services offered by the new initiative called Rahma, meaning ‘mercy’ in Arabic.

It aims to create awareness about cancer and the importance of early diagnosis.

“Rahma will devise innovative support mechanisms that help alleviate the suffering that cancer patients and their families go through,” said Dr Jamal Sanad Al Suwaidi, board chairman of the society.

A 24-hour hotline in English and Arabic will offer confidential support to those in need. Group therapy sessions will be offered to help patients share experiences, which will help them deal with the psychological effects of diagnosis.

The service will soon see the launch of an interactive website www.cancercare.ae where patients can share their experiences and post testimonies.

As one of its launch activities, the society is hosting a charity walk and cycling event at Yas Marina Circuit on November 7 from 5.30pm to recruit volunteers and raise funds. Tickets are priced at Dh50.
