ABU DHABI Reem Island residents are upset over a delay in the opening of a footbridge connecting three prime residential addresses.

The footbridge connects Sun and Sky Towers with Gate Towers and Arc on the opposite side of the street.

The three gleaming towers form part of the Shams Gate District developed by Aldar.

“Nobody thought it would take so long for it to open. Ever since I moved to this place, the bridge has remained closed,” said Amy, a British teacher who gave only her first name.

A comment from the property managers was not readily available.

Inconvenience

Amy lives in Gate Towers, the most eye-catching skyscraper in the area. “I buy my groceries from Waitrose located in the Sun and Sky Towers on the opposite side. It would have been so convenient to cross over to the other side using the footbridge,” said Amy.

Residents of Gate Towers and Arc said the footbridge was convenient as it connected them to Boutik Mall, which is part of a podium that connects the two residential towers.

“Boutik mall has a good range of restaurants and coffee shops. We love to hang out there on evenings and weekends. The footbridge meant easier and safer access from my tower. Now we have to use the signal and walk across the street,” said Lewis Young, an American architect.

Another Reem Island resident said he hoped the bridge would open before temperature soars in summer.

“It is frustrating that the bridge exists but we cannot use it. I hope they open it before the summer gets worse,” said the Arab national.

A British banker who lives in Sky Towers said the bridge has remained inaccessible ever since he moved in around one year ago. “It does not bother me much. But it is definitely an added value to thousands of residents in the Shams Community.”

“We are paying such high rents for the quality of life in Reem Island. I am surprised the property managers are not doing anything about it,” he added.
