DUBAI: An unsuspecting Indian schoolteacher in Dubai who spent $70,000 to acquire degrees from AXACT-run Gibson and Midtown universities now faces jail after being caught in a web of deceit.

On Sunday, the mother of a seven-year-old boy was summoned by a public prosecutor in Abu Dhabi and given a month’s time to return $30,000 (to an Arab man who had routed Dh183,000 (Dh110,100)through her to pay for his own degrees from the AXACT-owned Gladson University.

“I was contacted by my professor, Alex Miller, of Gibson University to help the man who couldn’t pay the fee online as he had crossed his credit card limit. The professor asked me to take cash from the Arab and pay his fee using my credit card which I did in good faith. I was a fool.

“Later there was a dispute between the Arab and the university. Fearing bad publicity, the university refunded the money to my account in four instalments which I immediately remitted to the Arab’s account between December 2014 and May 2015. XPRESS has bank statements showing the transactions to the tune of Dh183,000.

However, the Arab claims a sum of $30,000 is still unaccounted for. Following a police complaint, the teacher was summoned and asked to return the money within a month.

“They think I am a representative of the university, but the fact is that I am a victim myself. First I lost my hard-earned money on degrees that are not even worth the paper they are printed on and now it looks like I will lose my dignity and freedom too,” she said.
