ABU DHABI A complaint filed over a mobile data package has cost an American expat more than Dh2,000 when the telecommunications provider disconnected the service to fix the problem and later charged him for early termination fee.

Emil Tadros, a civil engineer in Abu Dhabi, said the telecommunications provider wiped off Dh2,097 from his credit card through auto pay.

“I never asked them to terminate my contract. I only wanted them to fix the issue on my subscribed data package as I was being overcharged,” Tadros, 40, told XPRESS.

According to him, he subscribed for a Dh305 a month data package on December 2, 2014. But the provider was billing him Dh365 per month. “When I filed a complaint after three months, they disconnected my phone and terminated my one year contract on March 14, saying that was mandatory to fix the issue. It took them almost 15 days to reconnect my service,” said Tadros.

“But what was shocking was they charged me Dh2,097 as fee for early contract termination. How is it my fault if they cannot fix an issue without terminating a customer’s mobile data contract?” asked the irate customer.

Tadros said his service was disconnected again within two days. “When I checked with the customer service, they said I have crossed the credit limit and the amount was wiped off from my credit card.”
