Sharjah: A massive fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon, guting four warehouses containing cleaning material, foodstuffs, furniture and electrical equipments in industrial area seven, a senior civil defence official confirmed.

Brigadier General Abdullah Saeed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence, told Gulf News the warehouse was divided into four smaller warehouses, each storing different materials.

"We immediately took the necessary precautions in the neighbourhood in order to prevent further spread, since the materials in the warehouses were highly flammable," he said.

The cause of fire, which broke out at 1.17pm, is still under investigation.

Officials from the police's Criminal Investigation Department were present at the scene on Wednesday afternoon as firefighters continued with the cooling process.

Some roads in the area had been closed as teams from the Civil Defence continued the cooling process, disrupting traffic.
