Dubai: Donations for the UAE Compassion campaign to help Syrian refugees in the Levant collected Dh228 million as the humanitarian drive drew to a close on Tuesday, WAM reported.

The donations included hundreds of tonnes of relief materials and food assistance worth Dh20 million.

The UAE Compassion (Tarahamu) campaign was launched last Tuesday under the directives of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and with the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to help Syrian refugees caught in fierce winter in the Levant.

UAE aid agencies will distribute relief materials and food assistance to help Syrian refugees endure freezing temperatures.

Mohammad Abdullah Al Haj Al Zarouni, head of Emirates Red Crescent’s Dubai branch, earlier said ground personnel have reached and helped more than 500,000 refugees since the campaign was launched last week.

The refugees received life-saving aid such as high thermal blankets, heating equipment and accessories, winter clothes, and food supplies.
