Sharjah: One worker died and nine others were injured in a freak traffic accident on Al Hamriyah Road in Sharjah on Wednesday evening, an official at Sharjah police told Gulf News.

The group of workers — eight Indian expatriates and two Pakistani nationals — were standing on the side of the road when a bus appeared and slammed into them.

The police received a call at 6.30pm reporting that a number of people were injured after the bus left the road and ploughed into the group.

The injured men were transported to Khalifa Hospital in Ajman where one of the Indian nationals, identified as S.S. aged 31, was pronounced dead on arrival.

The other victims received minor to moderate injuries and they were discharged from the hospital after treatment.

Initial investigation revealed that the bus driver did not pay attention to the road and did not notice the workers standing on the roadside.

The bus driver has been taken into police custody for further questioning.

Sharjah Police appealed to all motorists to abide by the traffic laws to avoid accidents and make sure that the road is clear before entering it, and adhere to speed limits.
