Abu Dhabi Forget about queueing up at airport check-in counters. Here is a “digital suitcase” than can check in on its own.

A product of German manufacturer RIMOWA, this new suitcase with an electronic tag allows passengers to check in from home or while on the road simply by using a mobile app.

The first digital and integrated mobility solution for luggages, the RIMOWA Electronic Tag suitcase consists of an E Ink Mobius display screen which is built into the luggage. And instead of the paper label that a counter staff attaches to the luggage while checking in, passengers will receive a digital luggage note from the airline along with their digital boarding pass when they book a flight.

Built-in data

With just a click, the luggage information on your mobile app can then be sent via Bluetooth to the suitcase equipped with the RIMOWA Electronic Tag.

All your details including your name, destination and flight details will be immediately displayed on the built-in data module screen on the suitcase which can then be dropped off at designated areas at airports.

Speaking to XPRESS at the launch of the first RIMOWA showroom in Abu Dhabi Mall on October 26, Dieter Morszeck CEO and President RIMOWA said the Electronic Tag is the “future of flying. This is a revolutionary technology that will make flying with baggage faster, more convenient and secure. When almost everyone has a smart phone these days, we thought it is only logical to connect suitcases to the digital world,” said Morszeck.

He said the digital information displayed on the screen is protected from moisture, heat, cold, shocks and vibration and cannot be accidentally torn off, unlike a paper label.

He said the product has already clinched the ‘Best Baggage Initiative Award’ at the FTE Global (Future Travel Experience) conference held in in Las Vegas this year. Lufthansa is the first airline to integrate the Electronic Tag feature in its app as part of an exclusive arrangement with RIMOWA, said Morszeck, adding talks are underway with other airlines to follow suit.

RIMOWA Electronic Tag suitcases will be available in stores beginning next year.

Morszeck said prices are in the process of being fixed.
