This is the heart-stopping moment when two planes appear to narrowly avoid a collision on the runway at Barcelona Airport.

The incident was caught on camera by an aviation enthusiast and uploaded to YouTube. Watch the full video below.

It shows a Utair Boeing 767 attempting to land on the airport's runway 2. But as the Russian jet makes its final approach, an Aerolineas Argentineas Airbus A340 taxis across its path, causing the pilot to pull up and ascend.

The Utair jet performs a go-around before landing safely shortly afterwards.

The video, uploaded to YouTube account Barcelona-El Prat In'tl, had been viewed more than 1.4 million times.

Uploader Miguel Angel says the incident almost became 'the (biggest) disaster of Barcelona Airport'.

The nerve-wracking near-miss is shown 30 seconds into the video.

Captain John Holmes, flight training manager at Ansett Aviation Training in Australia, told the Sydney Morning Herald the A340 captain may not have understood his instructions.

He said: "The instructions to the A340 possibly were misunderstood by the captain, or they might not have heard or acknowledged the instructions, or there may have been no instruction issued from the control tower."
