Los Angeles: Top-selling author Michael Crichton - the man who wrote Jurassic Park - has died of cancer in Los Angeles.

The announcement was made on the author's website. Crichton was 66.

A posting on Crichton's official website says that the author "died unexpectedly" after a "courageous and private battle against cancer" on November 4.

Crichton's books sold millions of copies and several were adapted into movies, including "Congo" and the "Jurassic Park" franchise.

He also co-wrote the screenplay for environmental thriller "Twister" along with Anne-Marie Martin.

"While the world knew him as a great story teller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us - and entertained us all while doing so - his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes," his family said in a statement.

"He did this with a wry sense of humor that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget."

"Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand," the statement said.
