Jackson's many faces

Last updated:

The King of Pop's changing looks will likely be remembered forever .

Michael Jackson's changing physical appearance was the most visible manifestation of an increasingly bizarre and freakish personality. Over the years Jackson's face was ravaged by serial cosmetic surgery and a jowly jawline. What led to his constant desire to reinvent his features? One can only speculate that his father's constant taunts during childhood and puberty - he told Martin Bashir in a 2003 interview that his father called him "fat nose" - might have had an impact.

1986

Jackson had his first nose job in 1984, following a broken nose he suffered while doing a complex dance move. Not content with simply fixing the fracture, he embarked on a lifelong mission to reshape his features by narrowing his nose. That job however was apparently botched, causing breathing difficulties and necessitating a follow-up. By 1986 his face had already dramatically changed.

Jackson took his grooming to a new level. In addition to less painful procedures like eyebrow plucking, he undertook further rhinoplasties, shrinking his nostrils beyond any normal size. He was also an early proponent of lip plumping injections. Eyebrow shaping and collagen injections, usually reserved for women, gave Jackson's face a feminine appearance.

2009

When we last saw Jackson at a public event, he looked better than he had in years. At the press conference to announce his concert series at London's O2 Arena, his face seemed to have filled out, his nose was noticeably thicker and his skin was smoother with less scarring.

2000

Jackson got a chin implant and suddenly lost his cleft chin, but acquired a good inch on his former jawline. The sides of his face were stretched taut. But the newest look - one we hadn't seen on him until that point - was the facial hair in the shape of a questionable goatee beard. His nose was taped up; apparently Jackson was terrified that his nose would fall off. The eyebrows, once Joan Crawford-esque peaks, became thick stripes.

2000

The creeping feminisation of Jackson's face was almost complete: With his long wavy hair, rosy lips and delicate features, he got ever closer to resembling his sisters Janet and La Toya.
