Dubai: As Americans prepare to go to the polls tomorrow to choose their next president, Gulf News readers have made their opinion clear; if they had a choice, they would vote for Barack Obama.
That is, according to our November 2, online poll results, 68 per cent of Gulf News readers would choose the democratic candidate.

Only 11 per cent would choose his Republican rival John McCain and 4 per cent say they would vote for independent candidate Ralph Nader. Interestingly, 17 per cent say they wouldn't vote for any of those candidates. It should be noted that support for Obama was stronger in previous months. That is, between June and now, support for Obama by our online readers has dropped by around 10 per cent.
Over the past 10 months, Gulf News has tried to monitor readers' opinions on the US election through online polls.
In January, we asked our readers whether or not they thought Senator Obama had a realistic chance of becoming US president.
There was a disparity of opinion with 52 per cent saying yes and 48 saying no. At that point, our readers were hesitant on whether or not the young senator can make it.
In February, we asked our readers who they preferred the next US president to be; Obama was top choice with 46 per cent but Senator Hillary Clinton and former rival came a close second with 45 per cent. McCain was a distant third with 7 per cent.
During the same month, we asked our readers to name the next US president. A slight majority chose Clinton with 47 per cent. Obama came second with 42 per cent and McCain came third with 11 per cent.
By May, the majority of our readers said Clinton should quit the presidential race and following a lengthy primary battle between the two democrats, Obama finally won the nomination of his party.
We asked our readers in June who they thought will become the next US president. More than seven out of ten said Obama.
Support for the democratic candidate intensified in October with more than eight out of ten readers saying he will be the next US president.
This is supported by the fact that the overwhelming majority of our readers think Obama will make a better president in these tough times.
The results of our polls are unsurprisingly in line with most of the polls conducted around the world, which expect Obama to win.
The latest of those polls is a Gallop poll which reveals that around the world, Obama is the preferred candidate.
It is interesting, however, to note that at the beginning of this year, a mere 26 per cent of Gulf News readers said it was likely for the US to have an African American president.
