Clinton and Miliband flirt their way through summit

US Secretary of State has told women's magazine of unlikely 'crush'

London : If they were in a classroom, the teacher would have separated them quick smart because Hillary Clinton and David Miliband were doing much more flirting than working on Friday.

The US Secretary of State, who has already admitted having a crush on her young British counterpart, was giggling like a schoolgirl at him. And Miliband was equally absorbed — despite the serious business on the agenda at the Nato summit in Brussels.

While the other foreign ministers in the room prepared for a discussion on the war in Afghanistan, the pair looked like a couple of overexcited teenagers. Clinton, 62, spoke last month of her unlikely crush on Miliband, 44.

She told Vogue magazine that she liked his accent and added: "Well, if you saw him it would be a big crush. I mean, he is so vibrant, vital, attractive, smart. He's really a good guy. And he's so young!"

Her remarks and behaviour are a real boost for Miliband, who has often been teased about his geeky image.

Former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell famously called him "Brains", not because he had a formidable intellect but for his resemblance to the nerdy puppet of the same name in the children's programme Thunderbirds.

Miliband seems equally taken with the former First Lady. Last month he said Clinton was "delightful to deal with one on one" and added: "She's someone who laughs and can tease, and she's got perspective as well."

Family man

Miliband is married to Louise Shackleton, a violinist with the London Symphony Orchestra. The couple have two children.

Labour Foreign Secretaries seem to be making a habit of chatting up their female US counterparts.

Jack Straw and Cond-oleezza Rice exchanged mutual compliments in 2006. She once gave him her bed on an overnight flight to Baghdad — and slept on the floor of the plane.
