London: It isn't just lack of motivation that stops some women leaving the house to exercise.

It seems there is another problem as well — embarrassment.

Being seen dressed in tight, Lycra-style clothing is such a worry that many exercise at home or only go out early in the morning or late at night, a survey reveals.

Nine out of ten women over 30 battle body-confidence and low self-esteem when considering outdoor exercise.

And more than half of all women are too self-conscious to try and get fit in public.

Overall, two out of three feel conscious about their shape when they exercise away from home.

Sixty-five per cent say it is unlikely they would be able to keep up in an exercise group, while almost half feel they would look silly.

Six out of ten are worried about sweating or going red, while two-thirds think existing members of an exercise group are likely to be unwelcoming.
