Manila: Two journalists were killed when Typhoon Washi hit Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City in the south last December 16, an online media agency said.

They were identified as Michel Kundiman of DxRJ and Leonisid Alsonado, according to Asian Correspondent.

Photojournalist Erwin Mascariñas lost his clothes when floods reached the office of the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP) in Nazareth village in Cagayan de Oro, Asian Correspondent reported.

A freelance TV reporter from Cagayan, who was not identified, continued covering evacuation centres and government retrieval operations even if his family lost belongings to the floods, the Asian Correspondent reported.

Because of Typhoon Washi's effect on journalists, NUJP began soliciting cash donations and relief goods.

"Fortunately, many have responded, including Filipino journalists from as far as Canada where NUJP has a fledging chapter," NUJP said, as quoted by Asian Correspondent.

Some 1,249 were killed and 1,080 others missing after typhoon Washi hit the southern Philippines. At least 695,195 residents in 789 villages in 13 provinces were also affected.
