Manila: A female radio listener spurned by her favourite disc jockey delivered her revenge by setting the station he was working at on fire, reports said.

The dzRH radio station reported the 19-year-old, identified as Rose Canquera, had been so enamoured with a disc jockey named “Benjie Parak” that she would travel for more than an hour from Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental to Butuan City where Parak’s station is located, just to ask the DJ for a date.

Canquera repeatedly asked Parak, whose real name is Jay Abordo, to spend some time with her and he would time and again refuse. Parak works for the local FM station Love Radio.

Fed up with rejection, the girl took matters into her own hands and delivered revenge. On Thursday, Canquera doused petrol on the radio station’s office on the second floor of the building before lighting a match and setting the establishment on fire.

No one was reported hurt in the several hours-long conflagration that damaged the radio station and other offices in the building including a travellers’ inn and convention centre, a bank, jewellery store and a hotel. Police said the fire gutted some P10 million (Dh881,728) worth of property.

According to the dzRH report, it was not the first time that Canquera tried to burn down the building. She was reported to have been sent to detention for the same offence several months ago but was released after it had been proven that she had been suffering from a psychiatric illness. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, goes the figurative line in a classical English play by William Congreve.

According to a report by the Manila Bulletin, the fire started around 7.30am on Thursday and was placed under control by 9.45am.
