Police cars to run on mix of diesel and used cooking oil
In a bid to conserve fuel, police vehicles in Makati City will now run on a mixture of diesel and used cooking oil.
Manila: In a bid to conserve fuel, police vehicles in Makati City will now run on a mixture of diesel and used cooking oil. In simple ceremonies on Tuesday in Makati, Philippine National Police Director General Avelino Razon and city police chief Gilbert Cruz unveiled a bio-diesel programme wherein normal diesel-fed police vehicles will be made to run on a mixture of four parts diesel and one part used cooking oil.
Considered as kitchen waste, used cooking oil is abundant. Its disposal had also posed a problem for food establishments.
However, under the scheme, thought up by Cruz, cooking oil discarded by Makati City's numerous fast food establishments will be used as an additive to the diesel.
Mini-plant
During the ceremonies at the Makati City Police Department on Tuesday, Razon and Cruz activated a mini-plant that will convert used fast food oil into bio-diesel fuel.
Cruz said mixing diesel with used cooking oil had become necessary due to the rising cost of fuel, which had had a serious effect on the operations of the Makati City police. The high price had forced them to cut down on their patrol operations, he said.
For this reason, he took the help of his friend, Roel John Judilla, an engineering professor who had several practical inventions to his credit.
Filtered
For his part, Judilla said he had developed a technique wherein impurities in the used cooking oil would be filtered and the resulting oil can be mixed with diesel as an alternative fuel.
The result is bio-diesel that is not only practical as it uses waste material, but also good for the environment because it helps rid the environment of carbon deposits.
Razon said the use of bio-diesel will be endorsed for wider adoption by the entire PNP, pending further trials.
Under the scheme thought up by the police chief, cooking oil discarded by Makati City's numerous fast food establishments will be used as additive to the diesel used as fuel in police wagons
