Dubai: He promised to make corruption history in his election campaign. The people believed and Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III went on to win. He was sworn into office as the 15th President of the Philippines on Wednesday.

Gulf News spoke to Filipino readers about their hopes and expectations for him.

Art Los Banos, a public relations consultant, said: "I expect the new President to rule with a lot of political will, which was lacking during his late mother's term.

"Now is the time for him to prove his critics wrong who questioned his managerial capabilities. He should show that he is the CEO of the new Philippines Inc."

Los Banos feels a strong leader will create a political environment that attracts investment.

Jenny Gonzales, a manager for development and community relations, said: "The major problems President Aquino may encounter during his term is the impending power shortage in Luzon — this might cause panic from the business sector, and affect the public.

"There is also a need for an immediate solution to poverty. Then [there is the] usual "utang na loob" [debt of goodwill] in hiring government officials, migration issues [such as] rampant human trafficking and illegal recruitment. I recommend he assign credible and fearless officials to handle these."

Filipinos are looking at the bachelor leader to create a progressive and corruption-free Philippines.

Reg Cucal added: "President Noynoy will face a huge problem in balancing the budget of our country left by Arroyo with huge deficit and debt. There is a need for Noynoy to have the political will to fulfil his campaign promise to end corruption in the country.

"I believe he can minimise corruption by reducing red tape and bureaucracy in the government. If he could [bring] professionalism to the military and police ranks, he would be able to weaken the lawless elements in the country."
