Manila: Day four of the impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona continued yesterday with debates focusing on the official's statement of assets.

The House of Representatives, which had been convened as a prosecution panel in the impeachment trial, is trying to pin down Corona for allegedly not faithfully disclosing the true value of his properties as reflected in his Statement of Assets and Net Worth (SALN).

House prosecutors had alleged Corona was able to acquire several properties in Metro Manila amounting to more than P200 million (Dh16.9 million) — an amount not commensurate with his income as Apex Court magistrate.

Corona had only been Supreme Court chief justice in 2010 but served in the judiciary in various capacities for more than a decade.

During the proceedings, senators, sitting as members of the impeachment court reviewed documents of properties whose ownership had been attributed to Corona. Based on his 2010 SALN, Corona has only declared five properties — they include apartment units at the Bellagio Tower and Bonifacio Ridge in Taguig City, The Columns in Makati City and Burgundy Plaza in Quezon City, and a house and lot in La Vista Subdivision, also in Quezon City.

The court is to reconvene on Tuesday.
