Manila: A left-wing youth group aired suspicions that President Benigno Aquino III has motives other than "public interest" in pushing for the impeachment of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Vencer Crisostomo, national chairperson of the Anakbayan (Sons and Daughters of the People), said a decision rendered last month by the Supreme Court on the contested partly-Aquino and Cojuangco family owned Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac Central Luzon could be the main reason why President Benigno Aquino III is going all out in his support for the impeachment of Corona.

Members of the House of Representatives, in another apparent political blitzkrieg, had swiftly moved to approve to tackle an initiative to impeach Corona---a known appointee of president Gloria Arroyo.

The basis for the impeachment, had been allegations put forward by several lawmakers, that alleged that Corona is not worthy of continuing on as the Supreme Court chief because he betrayed public trust, violated the Constitution and committed graft and corruption.

Aquino had overtly supported moves to impeach Corona and he had made this known in his public speeches. The President the impeachment and the eventual ouster of Corona is in the best interest of the public.

But Crisostomo doubts the president has altruistic motives for his actions.

"If he really wanted accountability and justice he had more than a year to do it. He only moved when his own interest was at stake," he said.

Aquino's family on the side of the Cojuangco owns the 4,000-odd hectare Hacienda Luisita which was the subject of a November 2011 Supreme Court that ordered the distribution of the sprawling estate to the farmers.

"His (Aquino's) actions could be beneficial to the people's quest for justice, but we should have no illusions about the real intentions of the Aquino gov't. We should be vigilant and should be wary of Aquino forming a puppet court of his own and consolidating his haciendero (big landowner) republic," he said.

"It appears that he was also doing this to look good in the surveys and cover up the worsening poverty and lack of job opportunities under this administration," he added.
