Manila: The son of former president Gloria Arroyo, congressman Mikey Arroyo and his wife paid 260,000 pesos (Dh21,666) bail for 13 tax cases filed against them, a lawyer said on TV.

Congressman Arroyo and his wife Angela posted 20,000 pesos (Dh1,666) bail per case before the Court of Tax Appeals, to show they are facing the cases filed against them and they are not leaving the Philippines to escape the charges, lawyer Rudy Rondain told ANC TV.

In a September 16 ruling, investigating prosecutors said Congressman Arroyo allegedly violated three counts of not filing income tax returns in 2003, 2008, and 2009, while wife Angela allegedly violated seven counts of not filing taxes from 2003 to 2009.

The prosecutors also said Congressman Arroyo violated three counts of failure to correct and give accurate information in his income tax returns for years 2004, 2005, and 2006

The Arroyo couple said the cases filed against them were politically motivated.
