Manila: After holding the distinction of being the most prolific text messagers, Filipinos have another trait they can add to their collective accolade — being the top viewers of video streamed over the internet.

In a recent global media survey, Universal McCann said that the Philippines has the highest percentage of online video viewers which include sites such as YouTube, Metcafe and Hulu among others.

Filipinos hold the distinction as biggest online video viewers despite findings that say that the number of houses connected to the internet is relatively low. This could probably be traced to the proliferation of neighbourhood internet cafes or similar establishments in the country.

Universal McCann had conducted the poll under its "Power to the People — Social Media Tracker — Wave 4" survey.

The poll said that out of more than 4 million Filipinos who are active internet users, 98.1 per cent watch videos on the internet. This figure is higher than the global average of 82.8 per cent.

Trailing the Philippines in a distant second and third position in video viewership are China and Spain with 89.1 per cent and 84.1 per cent, respectively.

Local telecoms operator, Smart Communications Inc, had shared the results of the survey.
