Manila A radio commentator was shot and wounded by gunmen on a motorcycle yesterday in Central Philippines in an attack that was believed to be connected with the victim's line of work.

Fernando Gabio, 62, was washing his car near his Iloilo City residence when he was shot at by two men wearing helmets to conceal their identity, radio reports said. Gabio was wounded in the leg and taken to the hospital where doctors declared him safe.

The victim works for the Radio Mindanao Network (RMN). Known to listeners as "Kapid Gabio" and "Mr Expose," the victim hosts a programme on dyRI radio station on Sundays focusing on topics concerning corruption.

An interview aired by RMN's dzXL quoted Iloilo City police chief Col Mar Valerio as saying that an investigation is under way.

Valerio said they have reason to believe that the attack was carried out by members of a guns-for-hire syndicate.

Death threats

Police officer Manuel Gabio, a nephew of the victim, said his uncle had been receiving death threats lately due to his tirades against influential people in the city believed to be engaged in nefarious activities.
