Manila: A man tried to steal a police car in Central Philippines' Cebu only to be foiled by an alert lawman who immediately set up a blockade.
Joseph Libre, 32, apparently had one drink too many with his friends Sunday evening when he tried to steal a police car in the village of Busay, Cebu City, the daily Sunstar reported.
According to the article, Police Officer Third Class Melvin Gines had left the car running and with the key in the ignition while he responded to an urgent call for assistance.
Libre was able to drive only a few metres before another police car blocked his path and forced him to give up.
Upon questioning, Libre had sobered up and told police that he really had no plan to steal the police car.
"I did it because I was drunk. I never planned to steal it," Libre said.
Charges of resisting arrest, disregard for a person in authority and driving under the influence of alcohol will be filed.
