Manila :Three people were killed, seven others were wounded, and eight missing in a landslide that occurred in a major highway in central Philippines’ Leyte province, a radio report said.

The incident occurred near a major road. The landslide occurred despite the absence of rains on Limao Village, Kananga, Leyte, said the report which quoted a regional disaster official as saying.

Tree-cuttings have occurred in the area which hosts the United Leyte geothermal complex, environmentalists said.

Usually, landslide occurs during rainy season, starting June every year. Most vulnerable are lower mountainous areas. Illegal loggers have been blamed for denuded mountains in the Philippines.

About 21 typhoons visit the Philippines every year, starting June.
