Mingora: Pakistani troops clashed with Islamic militants in the northwestern Swat valley, killing at least 60 rebels, the army said on Monday.

The rebels have called a ceasefire to recover their dead and wounded during the clashes on Sunday.

Army spokesman Major-General Waheed Arshad said there were no reports of military casualties and that troops were expected to continue putting up check points on Monday.

However, residents said they counted the bodies of at least nine paramilitary soldiers killed in the fighting.

"We heard big bangs the whole night. We don't know how many people were killed," said a resident of Carhbagh, west to the valley's main town of Mingora.

A suspected suicide attack that killed 21 people in the area last week triggered the fighting.
